Books for Kids Fall 2008 Read-A-Thon

Books for Kids is please to announce our Fall 2008 Read-A-Thon

Open a Book and the World Opens

Books for Kids is asking our schools, students and their families to participate in a very special event. On Monday, October 20, 2008 we will launch our Read-A-Thon city and boro-wide with the NYC Public Schools. Over 1400 schools will be invited to participate. Children and their families will be encouraged to sit quietly together to read, listen and learn. Young children who are not yet reading may also be involved by having a parent, sibling or caregiver read to them.

Please join Books for Kids and our special guests The Sesame Street Workshop. Your sponsorship dollars will help us to erase the boundaries in education for all children.

Funds raised will benefit Books for Kids and The Fund for Public Schools. Please contact Books for Kids to become a corporate or private sponsor of our Read A Thon.

The mission of
The Books for Kids Foundation is to promote literacy among all children with a special emphasis on low-income and at-risk preschool-aged children. Books for Kids creates libraries, donates books, and partners with renowned literacy programs. We touch so many lives and reach so many children who have no voice and little access to the very things they need to be successful later in life.

Reading opens paths of imagination and expands a child’s world in many ways. We know that children who possess strong literacy skills perform better in school, achieve higher grades and move on to higher education.

Low literacy levels are closely linked to poverty, welfare and unemployment. Over one million children drop out of school each year costing our nation over 240 billion dollars over their lifetime in lost earnings, foregone tax revenues and expenditures for social services.
Books for Kids seeks to eradicate the disparity in opportunities for all children.

Of course, we want everyone to be involved and participate to promote Police Community Partnerships for Safety and Neighborhood Unity. The Jersey City Police Department’s Community Relations Unit will coordinate this event.  There will be a safety presentation on the do’s and don’ts for Halloween.  We will have haunted themes and a haunted dungeon for the children and their parents to walk through.  Also, we will be handing out Halloween Safety Bags that will contain safety activity books, Halloween Coloring Book, glow sticks, etc.  Additionally, we will supply small pumpkins so the younger kids can mark them with funny or scary faces. All of these services will be provided free of charge to the public.

We are holding the event at The Hudson Mall District. We are having our event on Saturday October 25, 2008 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

What: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society's premier event to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer. Making Strides is a noncompetitive walk supporting the American Cancer Society’s unique mission to fight cancer on four fronts: research, education, advocacy, and patient services. When you get involved in Making Strides, you help ensure progress against breast cancer continues and more lives are saved.

Where: *NEW LOCATION* Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus

When: Sunday, October 26, 2008

Time
Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. Walk Begins at 10:00 a.m.

How: The success of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer depends on you. Individuals who walk and raise pledges are the key to defeating breast cancer. Encourage your friends to get involved; recruit a group to walk with you.  Nothing can describe the camaraderie of walking with those who share a passion for defeating breast cancer. Because many people have been touched by breast cancer in some way, it is easy to find others to walk with you.

join us onlinehttp://makingstrides.acsevents.org/paramus

Why: The American Cancer Society is the only organization available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to help people touched by cancer. Breast cancer is the number one reason people contact the Society. When you support Making Strides, you are helping us unravel the mystery of how breast cancer begins and seek better ways to prevent, detect, and treat the disease. Sign up for Making Strides and enjoy a day of exercise, camaraderie, entertainment, food, and most importantly, come honor someone you love that has been affected by this disease. Together, we will make strides toward a cancer-free future for all women, men, and their families.

4 Girls 4 a Cause

November 8, 2008

4 Girls 4 a Cause was founded by four New York City high-school girls who have joined together in the spirit of giving back to the community.

This year we are planning a benefit event for local area teens to raise the much needed funds as well as autism awareness. We are working to benefit the national autism organization, Autism Speaks.

The event will be held on Saturday evening, November 8, 2008 at The Ultra NYC where high school students will "Party 4 a Cause". Advance tickets, which will be sold on the 4 Girls for a Cause website, are $50.00. We anticipate selling more than 200 tickets.

To raise additional funds for Autism Speaks we will be selling raffle tickets. These tickets will be sold in schools as well as to the adult community. The drawing for the raffle prizes will take place at the event. We are looking for unique and special prizes, and are asking some of our favorite stores for donations.

We are also planning to raise funds for Autism Speaks through a special fashion event. We will be working with a local NYC designer who will be invited to design a t-shirt to promote autism awareness. The t-shirts will have a limited run and be sold at select retailers with a portion of the proceeds going to Autism Speaks.
